With new and exciting social media platforms taking centre stage, and perhaps monopolizing your time, has your twitter feed been neglected? We think Twitter still provides a great platform for businesses to stay in touch with their customers and keep them up to date on everything that’s going on.
So if your twitter feed is feeling stale, here are 5 ways to shake up your twitter marketing strategy and add some life back.
1. Bring it back to real-time
It’s easy to get comfortable scheduling tweets and moving on to the next task, but it’s important to remember the value of tweeting in real-time. Twitter’s best use is to bring people together for live events, and it is often the platform where information and breaking news is found first. Take advantage of this for any events or promotions happening with your business, and be sure to live-tweet.
2. Make new connections
Use Twitter as an opportunity to connect one-on-one with customers and influencers. Create twitter lists to keep tabs on influencers and customer relationships, and tweet directly to them.
It’s important to be a good listener on social media so you are able to respond to those talking about your business, or something related to it. We suggest using a tool to monitor mentions in your area of expertise so you can join in on the conversations happening around you and about you. One great tool is "mention" in your buffer account that allows you to track mentions across the web, blogs and social platforms. Or set up streams in Hootsuite, tracking hashtags or keywords related to your brand.
3. Run a contest
Contests are a great way to engage your audience. Run a giveaway on Twitter to create excitement and bring attention to your business. If you tie it into a new product or service, you’ll raise awareness about the offering as well as reach a larger audience through retweets and attract new followers.
4. Explore what’s trending
Keep an eye on what’s trending on Twitter, and join in on the conversation if it suits your business. Look at what’s trending nationally, but also pay attention to what is happening in your area as well. Whenever you find a good tie-in, take advantage of it. For example, by having their social media team at the ready during the Super Bowl XLVII, Oreo was able to take advantage of a power outage at the Superdome by tweeting an ad with the caption “You can still dunk in the dark.” The timely tweet was well received and drew a lot of attention to the brand.
5. Create a poll
Twitter polls are a fun and easy way to engage your audience on Twitter. They’re also a great way to gather information for your business. To create a poll, simply click into the compose box and choose the ‘add poll icon.’ You can chose up to four options, and set the duration from 5 minutes to a maximum of 7 days. You may be surprised by the results!
It’s easy to fall into the habit of just re-sharing content from your other platforms, but we think your twitter marketing efforts deserve some extra attention. We encourage you to try something new, and let us know in the comments what you think!
